Motivation

I created Elemental Action to assist fellow athletes to enact positive change, with the
hope of inspiring a broader vision of our responsibilities as role models.

Part of being an athlete is being a role model. Think about it. Everything you do sets
an example for other athletes, whether for your peers or for aspiring athletes. Whether
or not you're aware of it, people look up to you. I believe that as an athlete one ought to
make decisions with a heightened awareness of this responsibility as a role model.

I'm not saying that you should cater to or compromise your principles for an audience.
Instead, I'm suggesting that you
be clear about your principles in thought and
action
, and take the time to reflect upon how well your actions align with your
principles in practice.

I value the beauty of the natural world, as do most other athletes I know, but I've found
that in the course of my work as a professional cyclist, I have to fly across the country
for races and replace tubes, tires, cassettes and chains. There are many aspects of
my job that are necessary, but that do not align with my principles of minimizing my
ecological footprint.

I did some research to find out how I could better integrate those principles with my
work as a cyclist. I learned many things, but it took a lot of time and research to find
good information.

The realization dawned:
Many athletes and teams may want to do the right thing by
the environment, but very few have time to do the research and legwork
necessary to make it happen.

My goal is to help as many athletes and teams as possible integrate principles of
social and environmental responsibility into their team practices, by doing the
research and legwork for them.

Further, because every athlete and every team is different, my other goal is to
develop creative solutions specific to each client, making it cost-effective and
practical to make a difference.
